Hospice Training Course

Hospice Volunteer Training Class 2010

Eight Consecutive Tuesdays beginning January 26^th through March 16^th

9:30AM -12:30 PM

This annual volunteer training class meets for eight weeks, three hours per week.  Our goal for the class is to create a worthwhile and enriching experience that will enable you to feel confident and competent in becoming a Livingston Hospice Volunteer. The subjects listed below are the basics of what we plan to cover during the 24 training hours.  Any topics that are requested by the participants will be included in the curriculum. Hospice Training Manual is provided.

• Introduction to Hospice;  its history, mission and vision
• Evaluation of patients for admission to hospice care
• Description of the roles of the hospice team members, including volunteers
• Information about the Medicare Hospice Benefit and other insurance benefits for hospice care
• Care and support for the patient and the families we serve
• End of life care in Skilled Nursing Facilities
• Medical terminology, medications and the disease processes
• Understanding and management of pain, anxiety and uncomfortable patient symptoms
• Palliative care
• Signs and Symptoms when death is near
• Advanced Directives
• Spirituality
• Cultural Diversity
• Compassionate communication and active listening
• What to say and do at times when there seems to be nothing to say or do
• Issues of loss, grief, morning and bereavement

Monthly inservice- support meetings for volunteers are held on a continual basis throughout the year.
